Understanding the "Groan"

Tackling the Struggles of Group Projects
An angry boy

Teamwork in various settings is often frustrating, characterized by uneven workloads, miscommunication, and missed deadlines. This leads many to view collaboration negatively, with some studies showing a strong preference for working alone, largely due to these poor experiences. Communication breakdowns, including misaligned priorities and hesitation to speak up, are at the heart of these problems, preventing productive group work and skill development.

Groan Gauge is presented as a tool designed to overcome these challenges. By blending humor, playfulness, and practical features, it aims to make team communication seamless, engaging, and enjoyable, allowing members to participate more effectively and avoid common group project headaches.

My Research Toolkit: How I Investigated

To truly understand the challenges students face in group projects, my research employed a mixed-methods approach. I conducted user interviews with classmates from Courant and the Senior Project course to gather qualitative insights into their frustrations and needs. Simultaneously, surveys were distributed to collect broader quantitative data on common pain points in group collaboration. A literature review provided foundational context on communication dynamics and challenges within teams, while a competitive analysis examined existing digital tools used for collaboration. This comprehensive approach allowed me to gain a deep, user-centered understanding of the problems Groan Gauge aims to solve.

Competitive Analysis

Logos

The research included a competitive analysis of existing collaboration tools like Notion, Trello, Asana, Discord, and Slack. While these platforms offer robust features for organization, task management, and communication, they don't fully address the specific needs of student group projects.

Many lack the low-pressure communication styles, integrated fun, and expressive options (like meme integration) that can reduce anxiety and increase engagement. Furthermore, they don't inherently promote equitable workload distribution or offer playful accountability mechanisms, which are crucial for the student demographic.

User Personas

Who is Groan Gauge For?
Tired Timmy

  • Traits: Overburdened and socially awkward, Timmy ends up doing most of the work because he struggles to set boundaries or ask for help. Constantly tired but could appreciate humor to ease the tension, he is too young for high blood pressure.
  • Needs: Fair task distribution, accountability tools, and fun communication options to ease the stress.
  • Wants: I want to communicate with my teammates so that I can signal that this task is unbalanced without having to write an explanation because I am tired and overworked.
  • Preferred Features: Non-lingual nudges like groans to indicate how he’s feeling to the whole group.
Feisty Fiona

  • Traits: Fiona is passionate about getting an A and tends to overwhelm teammates with high expectations and constant follow-ups. Fiona’s overzealous nature can sometimes border on micromanaging.

  • Wants: I want to communicate with my teammates so that I can signal that this task needs more work and refinement without coming off as mean, unrelenting and demanding.
  • Preferred Features: The "groan" function for playful nudges that feel constructive rather than aggressive, task clarity to reduce micromanaging, and Giphy integration to keep the atmosphere light and fun.
Angsty Alex

  • Traits: Shy, socially anxious, and hesitant to speak up in group settings, Alex struggles with contributing because he’s worried about what people think. He often fades into the background. While Alex means well, the anxiety leads to procrastination and avoidance.
  • Needs: Low-pressure tools for communication, gentle encouragement to engage, and whimsical features that make participation feel less intimidating.
  • Wants: I should communicate with my teammates and let them know I'm still here. They're probably wondering about me, since I haven't left my apartment in 2 weeks or cracked a window because I was searching for inspiration for my screenplay.
  • Preferred Features: Reaction emojis for simple interactions, fun nudges (groans) to re-engage, and playful task visuals to ease procrastination.
